It tends to show up at night. The bills are paid, or paid enough. The people you love are asleep down the hall, and the life you fought for hums along like the refrigerator. Underneath it sits a thought you would never say at brunch:
I have a good life. So why do I feel like I’m still waiting for it to start?
Nobody warns you that grateful and restless can live in the same body. We’re taught the ache means you counted your blessings wrong. So you count again. The ache stays.
Then the guilt
Right behind the restlessness comes the prosecutor. Other people would give anything for this. You’re a decent person, so the prosecutor usually wins. You fold the feeling up, put it in a drawer and go back to being fine.
Feelings in drawers don’t stay folded. Ignored restlessness leaks out sideways, into the online cart at 1 a.m. or a sudden certainty that everything has to change by Friday.
Restless is unfinished
Restless isn’t ungrateful. Restless is unfinished.
The ache might be the part of you that knows there’s more of you to meet. A skill you haven’t touched in years. A version of your Saturdays you can almost picture.
Taking it seriously doesn’t mean blowing up your life. That’s the fear, that listening means you have to quit something by Monday. Usually she’s asking for a door cracked open.
A small, safe experiment
Give the restlessness two weeks and a budget before you give it a verdict.
- Name it badly. Plain, clumsy words. “I miss being new at something.” “I want my money to feel like it’s going somewhere.”
- Pick the smallest test. One class, or one coffee with someone who already does the thing.
- Set a ceiling. Decide the cost before you start. Example: two hours a week and $50 total. A ceiling keeps curiosity from turning into a crisis.
- Check in on day fourteen. Did the ache get louder, quieter or more specific? Specific is the one you want, because a specific want can go on a calendar.
None of this betrays the life you have. Write the ceiling on a sticky note, put it on the laptop and go back to bed. The refrigerator is still humming.
