Good news comes with its own amnesia. The apartment you refreshed listings for at midnight is now the apartment with the slow drain. The person you asked the sky for leaves the cabinet doors open. And the car that starts every single time is just the car.
It’s forgivable. Anything that arrives and stays turns into furniture, and nobody admires furniture. The answered prayer is still there. It just moved to the background and started paying rent.
The list you forgot you wrote
Most of us never wrote the old wishes down. We said them in the car, or into the pillow after a bad week. Please get me out of this place. Please let me make rent without doing the math twice. Please let there be one pair of jeans on earth that fits. Please let someone, anyone, call me back.
Those requests were specific. That’s the useful part. A past version of you kept a very precise list, and a surprising amount of it got checked off while you were busy chasing the next thing.
Take the inventory
Paper, fifteen minutes, phone in another room.
- Pick a year. Five or ten back. Picture where she lived and what her bank account looked like on the 28th of the month.
- Write her wishes in her words. Small ones count. A couch that wasn’t secondhand. A friend who texted first.
- Mark each one. Have, partly or not yet. Be honest in both directions.
- Read the “have” column out loud. It will feel ridiculous. Do it anyway.
Gratitude with the lights on
Nobody is asking you to pretend the “not yet” column is empty. The inventory makes no argument for being satisfied. What it gives you is a track record: you’ve wanted specific things before, and some of them came, partly through luck and partly because you kept showing up. Whatever you’re asking for now goes in the same file.
It’s also Scorpio season, which astrologers tie to looking beneath the surface. Use it as a prompt. A good month to check under the furniture and see what’s been holding you up.
Say thank you to the answered ones, by name. Then turn the page, write today’s date at the top and start the next list in pen.
