The Gratitude Issue 30 reflection prompts

One honest prompt a day for November: thankful for this, still wanting more.

Thirty prompts, one for each day of November, grouped by the four themes of The Gratitude Issue. Each one asks you to notice what is already here and then be honest about what you still want. You don’t have to choose between the two.

Use a notebook, your notes app or the back of an envelope. Five minutes is plenty. Miss a day and you can double up, or not. When a prompt asks for a number, write an actual number. A want without a number stays a mood.

Prints on two pages. Keep it by the coffee maker and answer one a day.

Gratitude for the woman you have become Nov 1-7

  1. 01Name a skill you now do without thinking that once made your stomach drop. What did it cost you to learn it?
  2. 02What do you have right now that an older version of you once wished for? Write down roughly when she wished for it.
  3. 03What did you stop apologizing for this year? If nothing comes to mind, what is first in line?
  4. 04Picture yourself three Novembers ago. What was she worried about, and how much was in her checking account? Write her one line of news from today.
  5. 05Which compliment do you deflect every single time? Write it down, write “thank you” after it, and leave it there.
  6. 06What decision did you make this year that nobody applauded and you would make again tomorrow?
  7. 07Write a five-sentence thank-you note to your body for one specific thing it carried you through. The word “but” is not allowed.

Abundance versus scarcity Nov 8-14

  1. 08What is one want you have never given a number? Give it one now: the amount, and the month you’d like to have it by.
  2. 09Finish this sentence three times: “I can’t afford to…” Then rewrite each one as “I haven’t chosen to…” Which ones are still true?
  3. 10What rate or salary would you quote if you knew the answer would be yes? Write it. Then write the number you actually say out loud. Look at the gap.
  4. 11If gratitude and ambition sat at the same table, what would each of them say to you? And which one picks up the check?
  5. 12What are you saving “just in case”? Money, energy, the nice candle. Describe the case you are waiting for, in detail.
  6. 13Name one thing you spend money on that makes you genuinely happy. Write the monthly amount next to it and do not justify it.
  7. 14Where are you calling it contentment when it might be fear?

Gratitude for people, challenges, lessons and growth Nov 15-21

  1. 15Who made your life easier this year in a way they probably don’t remember? What exactly did they do?
  2. 16Whose good news has been quietly telling you what you want? Write down her win, then write your version of it next to it, with a date.
  3. 17What did a hard season give you that you would not trade back, and what would you never want to repeat?
  4. 18Who helped you become who you are this year, and do they know? If they don’t, draft the text now.
  5. 19Which “no” you heard this year turned out to be a redirect? Where did it send you?
  6. 20What rule did you learn from a bad boss, a bad breakup or a bad deal that you still follow? Is it still protecting you, or just keeping you small?
  7. 21Name one hard thing you are not grateful for. You don’t have to be. What are you proud of yourself for in the middle of it?

Appreciating today while dreaming about tomorrow Nov 22-30

  1. 22Sagittarius season starts today, a good week to think about where you want to go. Name one room you want to be in by this time next year.
  2. 23Name one thing you are saving for a more deserving day. What would it mean to use it this week?
  3. 24Describe an ordinary Tuesday one year from now, from first coffee to lights out. Circle every part of it that is already true today.
  4. 25Pick one goal and do the math. What it costs, minus what you already have, divided by the months you want to give it. That’s your monthly number. Is it scary, or just unfamiliar?
  5. 26Thanksgiving. Write the thank-you note before the thing arrives. What are you thanking the future for, and what is your part in it?
  6. 27What about this exact season of your life will you miss once it’s over? Enjoy one piece of it on purpose today.
  7. 28What would you start if nobody needed you to stay the same?
  8. 29What are you ready to release before December? Be specific: a habit, a subscription, somebody’s opinion of you.
  9. 30Make two lists side by side: what arrived this year, and what you want next. Both lists are allowed to be long. Which one did you write faster?
